Gardening Tips To Save Money: 1. Using Plastic Bottles As Drip Irrigation

My first tip to save you money is to recycle those plastic bottles and let them work in your garden as drip irrigation. This is a great idea for your plants to have a slow but constant amount of water delivered to the roots of the plants.
This tip also works well when you are on vacation and need to keep your containers watered.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
- Recycled water bottles
- Push Pin
Step 2: How Do You Make Drip Irrigation From A Recycled Bottle?
Put the top on your bottle and use your push pin to make 6 holes in the top. ( Be careful not to poke your finger.)
If you prefer, you can remove the label from your bottle so that it will be less noticeable in your planter.
After you are satisfied with that process, remove the top and fill your bottle with cold water. After your bottle is full, put the top back on the bottle securely.
Your bottle top should look something like this.
Add your bottle into your selected planter with the top put down into the soil. Push the bottle down into the soil enough so that the bottle is able to stand upright without tipping over.
You will need to add water to your bottle as needed.
I love to use this idea for our containers when we are not able to water the flowers for a few days.
You need to check on your bottles about every other day to make sure they still have water.
If you are looking for a prettier option, I also use these and they work the same way and are very inexpensive.
Gardening Tips To Save Money: 2. Recycling Grow Pots And Water Bottles For Pot Fillers
My second tip for saving money in the garden, is to recycle your grow pots and water bottles and use them as pot fillers for your containers.
I have been using this tip for years and it is my favorite tip that I am sharing today.
Adding recycled grow pots or water bottles to your containers not only saves your wallet because you are buying less potting soil but it also saves your back because your containers will be lighter.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
- Grow pots from plants
- Water Bottles
- 2 Liter Bottles
- Container
- Flowers
- Potting soil
Step 2: How Do You Add Recycled Material To Your Containers To Save On Soil?
Add your grow pots or your recycled plastic bottles to the bottom of your container. I always fill my container half way with the recycled bottles or pots.
After the recycled material has been added, I then add my potting soil. After that I add my flowers and add more potting soil to the top of the container.
I have these concrete planters by my door. Putting these water bottles in the bottom of this container also provides proper drainage for my flowers and I can move the planter on my own since it’s not so heavy and full of soil.
Gardening Tip To Save Money: 3. Save Those Plant ID Tags
Keeping your plant ID tags in a safe place so that you can refer back to them, is a great way to set yourself up for success with your new plants.
Every time I buy a new plant, I would always throw the ID tag away. I thought that I would remember the directions for keeping the plant alive.
Unfortunately, I never did remember and when my plant started having problems I wasn’t sure what to do.
You could always resort to google and look up what the plant needs but you have to remember the type of plant that you’re are dealing with to be able to google it.
I just started saving my plant ID tags this season and I’m so glad I did.
Where Do I Keep My Plant ID Tags?
I just slip my plant ID tags into a pocket in my planner and I can refer back to them as needed.
What Else Are Plant ID Tags Great For?
Plant ID tags are also great to keep around so that you can remember what combination you used in a container. I write down all of the plants names and combinations that I have used.
I make a note in my planner if I liked that combo and can pick up those flowers again. This tip saves me so much time and I am so glad I started keeping these ID tags this season.
Gardening Tip To Save Money: 4. Recycle Old Containers
We all have old planters and containers laying around that might not be the color that we want for our garden.
I love to garden on a budget and to recycle and use things that I have on hand. Reimagining things in a different way is what makes your garden unique and will save you money.
When we moved into this house in November, one of the things I found is that the previous owners left several old flower pots.
You can see other pots that’s I have given a makeover here and you can see how I incorporated some of these pots into my outdoor spaces here and here
Here is one container that they left.
Since this flower pot is in great shape, but it is not the color that I am going for in my garden I decided to reimagine it. This container has also been faded by the sun but it is huge and will hold a lot of flowers.
What Are Some Ways That I Can Recycle Old Containers?
Changing a container to fit into your space is easy with spray paints of course! The color spray paint that I used is not available but this is similar. I sprayed the container with two coats and sealed it with this.
I planted hydrangeas in this container and I love how it looks now. Because there are so many options with spray paint, it’s easy to change the look of a recycled container. Don’t throw those old containers away, reimagine them!
Gardening Tip To Save Money: 5. Check Sales At Your Garden Center
Garden Centers always have a sale section where they put flowers that need some TLC. These flowers are usually marked at 50% off and usually only need some water and good soil.
How Do I Find Sales On Flowers?
The sale section at most garden centers is all the way in the back and is usually the last stop for some of these plants. Unfortunately, some of the flowers are beyond helping but recently I rescued some hydrangeas from the sale section for 50% off and I plan to add them to an outdoor patio that I will share soon.
It is worth the time to check the sale section. Who knows, you might find some great deals!
