This was a fun DIY when my deck got a makeover on a budget. Now it is another fun space for my family to hang out.
This DIY Deck Makeover on a Budget was such a fun project and I’m excited to share it with you!

Before: Drab and No Personality
Overjoyed is the word that describes my feeling when I realized this house has a deck and a screened porch. (More on the screened porch later) I was already planning what the deck would look like before we even signed the contract to buy the house!
Move in day was November 12th and since it was so close to the holidays all of my time and energy was spent unpacking boxes and getting ready for the holidays in our new house. My plans for a beautiful deck makeover was on the back burner.
Fast forward to May, when I finally got around to decorating this space. It was just a drab space that needed some TLC. I set out to give this deck a makeover on a budget while using mostly what I already had on hand. This is a look at the deck before the makeover.
Plans: To Make This Space A Nice Hangout For My Family
This space has good bones but I wanted to cozy up this space with a rug, flowers and a conversation area. Since this space is not covered, I needed items that could withstand the elements. I started looking for an outdoor rug, flowers and containers for my flowers.
Cleaning: DIY Deck Makeover

I cleaned everything off of the deck, with the exception of a huge flower pot that I worked around. Then I gave the deck a good cleaning with this cleaner. I have used this cleaner before and I was happy with the results. Just make sure that you read the directions and leave it on the specified amount of time for your surface. A pressure washer also would work well on this project. You can find the one that we own and love here
Reusing What You Have: DIY Deck Makeover
We have a pair of Adirondack chairs that we have had for about two years. Since these chairs are still in fairly good shape, I wanted to reuse them and give them a fresh coat of paint. These chairs were used very little at our other house and mostly served as decor in the backyard. My hope is that with them closer to the house we will use them more.
First, I cleaned the chairs well with a mixture of vinegar and warm soapy water. I love to use this homemade cleaner anytime I am prepping a piece for paint. After cleaning them well, I gave these chairs two coats of white exterior paint from Lowes. I’ve said it before, never underestimate the power of paint. Just with a coat of paint, the chairs looks so much better.
Adding Details: DIY Deck Makeover
Next I added this rug from Target and it really made the space feel so cozy. This rug also cleans up like a dream. When it gets dirty, I just rinse it with the water hose and it looks great again.
I also had envisioned concrete planters on either side of the door but I wanted some that didn’t break the bank. I decided on these planters from Lowes. They are great quality and they are beautiful with my Kimberly Queen ferns in them.
Kimberly Queen ferns are now my favorite fern. They can withstand our South Carolina heat and they thrive in the sun.
I already had this wreath, so I just added some colorful ribbon and let them trail down the door. I love how this DIY deck makeover on a budget turned out.
Annabelle likes it too!
This deck is now a wonderful space for my family to hang out. Let me know how you like our new outdoor space. I hope that this has inspired you today!
